There are over a thousand ways for one to answer the question that challenges the idea of simplicity’s presence in something surprisingly complex. As years continue to pass, our knowledge on areas and subjects of so many different things expand immensely. One area that continues to expand over the years is the manner in which people express themselves through art. Whether it is poetry, paintings, music, photography, or any of the millions of other art forms, the human race has never ceased to amaze with their ability to create art. Since the beginning of man, people used art to express their feelings and to communicate with one another. The first art forms came in face paints, songs, poems, and other traditions that have made lasting impacts on the art we enjoy now. Art is a form of expression, and how one personalizes that, is what makes every work of art so unique.
Art is an expression of feeling, or emotion. The words on a paper, the strokes on a canvas, or the lyrics to a song, all express the artist's’ emotions in one way or another. Art is a way to express feelings of anger or happiness, love or loneliness, and the spectrum of emotions is too vast to begin to list off. Art is a non-verbal and non-violent form of expression, which has given freedom to artists across the globe. Art is not limited to a single category or idea. Art can be anything we make of it.
Traditionally, art was used to draw images used as communication. The hieroglyphics that flood the caves of ancient tribes are some of the world’s first forms of art. Whether it be the Native Americans, the Mayans, the Aztecs, or any of the world’s first civilizations, they all had one thing in common, their immense influence on modern art forms today. In the form of a language, art is clearly a form of expression as the people who used images to tell a story were representing their feelings and emotions. Even today, some languages such as Chinese or Japanese still consider their form of written language “characters” because they are images that come together to form ideas. The images used in a given language are no different than different brush strokes used by a painter to paint a picture. Even the modern Greek alphabet that we use today in America may seem like letters, but in reality, those letters were once considered merely drawings that came together to form words and ideas. All of our written language is just art in a simple form.
Emotions, sentiments, and attitudes are expressed through an artist’s painting or drawing without verbal communication. This non-verbal way of communicating is what makes art so special. A painting can have one meaning to one viewer, and a totally different meaning to the next. Form one person to another, everyone is entitled to their own opinion of the artwork. Art as a visual representation of feeling has been prominent since the beginning of time and magnificent sculptures, paintings, and drawings have wowed the eyes of so many, but more importantly, communicated emotions through every mind that they enter.
