Our project summarizes the new influences seen in early Christian art and architecture. Christian references and new techniques were addressed. We focused on four main artworks: Christ as a Good Shepherd, Sarcophagus of Junius Bassus, Old St Peter’s Church, and Santa Costanza. We used material from our textbooks, the MCHS APAH website, and online images to create the podcast. We play ourselves in the video. |

Kit Chavers and Rachel Kay (Ancient Rome)
Our song includes information about Rome and how it came to be. The song goes like a story, explaining the beginning of Rome, and many important factors that contributed to the success of the Roman Empire, specifically its art. The two pieced we focused on were the Colosseum, and the Pantheon. We gave background to both of the architectures. Our chorus has a little funny satire, poking fun at how many Roman Statues are influenced by the Greeks and much of what Romans did was in competition with Greeks. In our chorus we also include vocab words (arches, columns, and domes), which were all important during this architectural period. Our bridge portion of the song ties into the theme MERIT which we learned to help us memorize important aspects of Roman architecture. We focused on architecture because much of what the Romans created paved a road for modern architecture and their greatest contributions were their monuments. Monique Bolsajian and TJ Ford (Etruscan)
In the following SmartHistory podcast, art historians Monique Bolsajian and Tiffany Ford discuss Etruscan art of the Archaic period. Two pieces are the focus; first the pair examines a fresco from the “Tomb of Hunting and Fishing” from the Monterozzi Necropolis of Etruria, then the duo analyzes the terracotta sculpture of Apulu Veii. Cultural and religious trends, along with the historical context of the era, are discussed through in-depth dialogue on the pieces. Themes of increasing naturalism touch upon both works of art. |

Alexa Silvershein and Roxy Vabrey (Byzantine)
To the tune of Ice Ice Baby. In the first verse the rap explains the blending of Catholicism and Islam in the Hagia Sophia. It emphasizes the importance of light as the physical representation of God. The second verse shows how the Theotokos foreshadows Jesus' death and demonstrates the importance of Justininan's influence over trade. In the third verse, Justinian's power over international trade is represented through the imagery of lions. Next the verse explains how the skull in the Crucifixion is a symbol for the city of Golgatha. In the next verse the importance of the piers of San Vitale are shown. The following verse, explains a major overview of the era. The last verse also reviews Byzantine as a whole. |

Taylor St. Germain and Rachel Waxman (Aegean)
In our song, Aegean Space, we clearly sing about key themes in Aegean art as well as the lives of the Aegean people. We go into depth regarding several pieces of artwork during that era, describing stylistic aspects of the art and architecture as well as ideas and influences. Our video stars guest actress, Taylor Swift. In the video, we took the first 30 seconds of her song, Blank Space, the song in which Aegean Space is based, and added an “Aegean art” spin. We replaced key objects in the video with Aegean artworks that we refer to in our song. We thought it would be an entertaining way to learn about Aegean art by putting a twist on a classic, T-Swift song. Who knew Taylor’s breakup with Harry could be so educational? LYRICS |
