I believe that art is representational of feelings or emotions created solely to evoke them out of either the artist or the viewer. How you perceive the artwork thus matters only to the individual and their own opinion is based on one’s perspective. What makes art universally appealing is that is can never fall into an outlined, rubricated category because art is always changing its definition and extending outside of its setted guidelines. It’s a never ending process of change and discovery that could never be fully explored because there is always a new possibility. Art can be representative of the time period or the society it was created in and thus is always connected to some aspect of the human perspective. Art can fall in the categories depicted above and that’s what makes art incredibly interesting and continually evolving. Art is a form of expression and that’s why art is fully based on the individual's perspective and connected to its culture.
About eight months ago I wrote the paragraph above believing I had an idea of what art was and yet still feeling completely lost on the definition of art I had created. However, rereading the statement above, I am surprised that I still agree with what I said. Art cannot be condensed into one single format that all artists must follow. I believe that state of mind is something that in the last couple of decades artists have tried to unravel proving countlessly that art can be anything you perceive as art. With The Fountain by Duchamp exposing the flaw perspective of the typical art piece and with Manet’s Breakfast On The Grass breaking the stereotypical boundaries of art
Yet, throughout the year I also realized the kind of artworks that I enjoy learning about because I found them completely beautiful and interesting. However, other classmates were bored with the material and inspired by the next chapter which goes to prove that art is anything that you find beautiful. Anything that connects with you and sparks an interest in the piece to research the backstory and fully understand the nature and thought process of the artist. But after taking this class, I know realize that art is also interconnected with how much you know about art. Art can still be enjoyed by the emotions it sparks within you when you first see it and that doesn't change with how much you study art. However, a new relationship with art is created once you have studied it creating a newfound love for museums and detail. The last time I visited the Getty, I couldn’t believe that I was now the person staring intently at each artwork, scrutinizing each piece of detail and holding the group back. Knowledge of art brings out new colors and brushworks that you would have never otherwise seen before.
I also found it interesting that I previously stated that art is affected by its surroundings and its culture which I still believe is true, but I would know say that it depends a lot on the time period. Artists such as Van Gogh and Gauguin who were in completely different parts of the world at times and yet still painted the same their post-impressionist style. I find that incredibly interesting that an artist can be in another country, yet because of what’s popular for that style they’ll influence one another. That is art in my perspective, thriving off of one another and playing with the boundaries of art to see what sparks that passion within you.
