You Can See It
Art surrounds us every day of our lives. At the beginning of the year I had a very close-minded idea of what I thought art was. As the year went on, my interest in art grew and I even found some things exciting. It was an area of knowledge that I knew nothing about and as my knowledge of art grew throughout the year, I soon realized how relevant it is in our daily lives. I noticed how often art was referenced and I enjoyed knowing what people were talking about.
Art does not have one specific definition and it cannot be determined by a set of rules because art can really be anything. Self expression plays a large role in art because people create things from an internal driving force. Artists have a feeling that make them do what they do. They don’t know exactly what is going to result before they even begin.
Art has evolved because there are now many different ways to express yourself. Art isn’t just what was created in the past and is now sold for millions of dollars or hanging in museums. Everyone uses art in their own ways without realizing it. A chef is an artist because every meal they create comes from their own passion. A chef puts their own twist on common foods and sometimes they create things that didn’t exist before. They are expressing themselves through food and their food has different impacts on the people who consume it. Just like people who look at art hanging on a wall, they have a similar experience as eating the artwork sitting on their plate. Similarly, fashion designers are artists. They put together shows and collections of whatever item of clothing they want to create. There are no limits when people have something they want to express and this is especially true for fashion. People wear clothes every day and the clothes they choose to wear is them expressing themselves. One may argue that they put no thought into what they wear every day however, people often have an instant opinion on who you are based on what you look like that day. Therefore, if you don’t care what you look like, others can probably perceive that you think that way just by what you are wearing.
One main point of art is that it makes people think. People may have different perceptions on a specific artwork. The colors, textures, lines, and images can all influence a person’s thoughts. Art can tell a story or give insight into a person or problem. Only the artist truly knows what their art means however, some of the greatest things about art is making a meaning for yourself. Art can be pleasant, unpleasant, beautiful, ugly, dark, etc, because there is no defining line or rules.
Looking back on my thoughts about art before I had any real knowledge; there is some accuracy. However, I now believe that art has been used in more ways than I said before. Art has been used to tell stories of history in a more colorful light than what we read in textbooks. Art is a real life hands on version of real history and real evidence that something happened. Picasso, Michelangelo, da Vinci, etc. are all artists who were doing something for themselves at the time. Little did they know that their creations would be remembered after their deaths. In the grand scheme of things art is really everything if you look at the world in a different light. I believe that the driving force behind all art is self expression.
