Imagine the World Without Imagination
The world is a blank space for us to fill our imagination and creativity with. Art means something different to each person. Generally, religion, politics, culture, emotions, and the environment greatly influence art. People continuously change, evolve, and grow, which affects art in the same way; as people change, so does the perception of art. Art is primarily split up into three main categories: visual, performing, and language arts. Art is constantly changing as time passes and has varying definitions, but overall the basis of art is imagination and creativity.
Visual arts consist of anything someone can see or touch. Paintings, drawings, and sculptures are the main types of visual art. Visual art is full of meaning and imagination as an artists creates something from nothing. Visual art is largely influenced by interpretation; one person will understand the artwork in one way and another person will see it in a completely different light. That is the beauty of art; thousands of perspectives can be wrapped up into one painting. Visual art is a way for people to release their feelings and put them down on a page, or sculpt them into an entire new form. The environment influences visual artists and their creativity determines the path of the artwork.
Performing arts consist of anything in front of an audience, such as, music, dancing or acting. Emotions are the center of performance art. The performance reflects the artist’s feelings which also sets the tone for how the audience perceives the performance. The audience can feel empowered, saddened, enraged, etc. If the artists is angry, the audience will also feel that. These artists take something small and piece them all together to create something large, known as a masterpiece.
Language arts are the most common, subtle form of art. Conversation, writing, and different types of language fall under this category. Language arts are full of imagination. It takes grave imagination to write a novel with complex characters, themes, symbols, and plot. Speaking symbolizes the beauty of art through imagination, which connect people on a personal level.
After taking APAH, my definition of art stays primarily the same, but the way I approach an artwork is completely different. Before, I had no idea how to understand the meaning of a painting, but it is now easy to make connections and understand the underlying symbols. Understanding the artwork makes it more intimate and meaningful. Previously, I would stare blankly at an artwork, but now I feel a stronger, emotional connection with the subject matter and the artist. Art can be anything; I mean, after tasting two glazed donuts smushed together by cookie butter ice cream at Coachella, I know that is a fact. From Picasso's Starry Night masterpiece, to Zedd’s remix of “Alive,” I see art as an outlet, freedom, and an escape.
