The Act of Creating is How Art is Made
After taking AP Art History I am confident to say that my definition of art is still the same as it was before. Although my understanding of art has changed, the idea of art is still the same. I am able to analyze art better, but that doesn't change what I see as art and what I don't see as art. I agree with everything I stated before. Art is anything that can be created.
My opinion is that art is anything that can be created weather I like the creation or not. Most people believe that if something is ugly or they don't like it, then it is not considered art. But if art is an opinion someone else may find it beautiful. For me, somebody still had to create the ugly picture or bad song, which is why it is qualified as art.
Art is an overbearing word for a multitude of things. Art is not just a painting, an oil pastel, or a drawing. Art is way more than that. Art is a building, a song, a dance, a candy bar wrapper, a car, a human being, a perfume scent, a mixed drink. Art is the way somebody talks, art is a t-shirt, art is a swimming pool, art is a photograph of a landfill, the frilly imprints on a roll of toilet paper, a double chocolate chip frappuccino from Starbucks. Art is Forrest Gump, art is a grilled cheese, a staircase, a smile, a poem, an app, a cupcake, a plate with piece of steak with mashed potatoes on the side. Art is a phone case, art is this essay I am writing. Art can be anything. Art has to be created.
Art in someway must be created for it to be considered as art. It does not matter the purpose for the creation because deciding what the purpose of it is, is an opinion. As long as it is created it is considered art to me. Somebody spent time to create something and how we interpret that thing is solely up to us. The artist can tell us what their creation represents to them but that does not mean the viewer has to agree. Art really does not have to have a meaning at all other than to fill the world around us. Some art works become famous because of the meaning behind them, but if anybody can interpret art in their own way, then an artwork becoming famous because of it’s meaning makes no sense.
If art is an opinion then I ask, “Who decides what paintings or sculptures or drawings get to go in famous museums? Why would one painting become more famous than another. How is the Mona Lisa considered the most famous work of art? Who even decided that it was art?” The only answer I can think of for these questions is that the creator must have had really good luck. For some reason their creation was chosen over the rest. But if that’s the answer then is it really fair to call somebody an Artist just because their creation was chosen?
If art is anything that can be created, imagine a life without art in it. No music, no movies, no omelets, no pillows, no cars, no poems, no juice, no pictures, no sweat pants, no people. Absolutely everything would be different. What would even be on this planet? Without art is there even life? That’s the question that I do not know how to answer.
