What Art Means To Me
Art no doubt plays a crucial role in our society, whether it’s a painting on the wall the cave or a Jackson Pollock piece that looks like a mish mash of colors splattered on the canvas there’s no question it’s an important piece. Art can be many different things to many different people; the things you experience during your lifetime shapes ones opinion of art. To me art is three things; Art is influential, comforting, and a way to express your creativity.
Above all else art is influential, since man came to be art has played a pivotal role in his life, whether it be painting a picture of a cow on the wall to describe his daily life and to ensure others in a primitive way that he is struggling just as the rest of his peers are. Or art can influence and motivate others to do things they may not have done, this motivation can be expressed in many different ways. For example a beautiful picture of a place you have never been before may motivate you to go visit that place. That need to go to the place and the picture is due to artist’s perception of that place. That artist can convey that emotion Beautiful place makes him or her field to make the viewer feel the same way. This means the artist has the power to influence the way to feel about a place solely based off of art, and this gives the artist and a great deal of power. As time went one people started to realize the persuasive power of art and they used it to attempt to swing the opinion of the public, mainly in politics. This has forever changed how people view the political world of the US political race, for example, is heavy with examples of how art can influence a persons mind. The most prominent of these works of art is Obama’s Hope poster. Design by artist Shepard Fairey consists of a stylized stencil portrait of Obama and solid red, Asian blue, with the work progress, hope or change beneath its face. This portrait quickly became an icon for the first black presidential candidate who promised a nation change. Without this piece of art that went viral it’s arguable that Obama never would’ve gained popularity he did. The art allowed him to connect with the younger and wider audience, which most likely allows him to get a leg up in the election. His ability to seem modern and hip fit in well to his democratic party beliefs and really helped him to connect with the audience on a personal level. These two examples show how influential art can really be at anytime.
As I look back at this year the influence art has on people has only become more and more apparent. One thing I never thought about is how art can actually be the one under influence. I learned that art not only influences people but also it can be influenced by the people and events of its time. For example when painters paint big murals of religious figures such as cherubs and Jesus and the holy trinity they aren’t attempting to influence people into joining their religion they are being influenced by their religion to paint these images. This is the same reason that people always feel influenced to paint images or create works of art after a tragedy. To this day the photos of 9/11 are some of the most bone chilling and raw emotional photos in US history. While these photos may have influenced people to go out and volunteer their time to the cause the main source of influence was the actual tragedy.
As our class progressed through the years of art I realized a pattern. This pattern is that art has played a role in everyone’s life and influenced them evenly. Whether it was the rich patrons who commissioned their own artwork or simply a peasant admiring a picture in a storefront art can touch anyone’s life and impact it greatly.
