The Definition Of…
What is art? According to the internet, art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. But I personally feel that art is the ability to create something out of nothing, more specifically somethings that hasn’t been created before. I also feel that art is whatever someone calls art. By trying to create a definition for art you are forming an opinion whether than a fact. In one person’s eyes art is pieces of work such as the Mona Lisa, or Starry Night while in another person’s eyes art is graffiti on the wall of a warehouse.
When I say that art is the ability to create something out of nothing I mean creating something that is so unique that it throws people off guard because it is like nothing that they have ever seen before. They may have mixed emotions and while some people love this work of art and embraces its individuality others may hate the fact that someone would even considered it art. But my definition of art doesn’t stop there, art is something, someone, somewhere, sometime, art is everywhere around us and everywhere around us is art. In other words our entire existence is a work of art, the universe is art, and the way in which the universe was formed. In my opinion art is a synonym for nature, humanity, and anything you could come up with. Like how the universe has no boundary neither does art. By trying to create a fixed definition of art it is like trying to figure out what truly happens when we die, it impossible to come up with an answer that the majority can agree upon.
Now, eight months later my perception of art has changed, but not very much. While I still believe that anything can be defined as art, I’ve also come to understand that in order for something to be displayed in a museum or gallery as art it must look like that artist put much effort and work into it. No one could just draw a red line on a piece of paper and except a significant amount of others to consider it art. By choosing to stick to your own definition of art you are taking a risk, a risk that includes people largely disagreeing with you to the point where they won’t even take you seriously anymore. To the point where people would no longer respect your opinion on what art is to you.
Also, over these last eight months I have applied my definition of art more and more to science and the universe. I personally see the universe as a gigantic canvas and the first brush stroke on that canvas was the big bang when, for the first time, nothing was turned into something, and that something is everything we have come to known as a species and all the other things we have yet to discover. I also believe that us as human beings aren’t fully capable of truly understanding the meaning of art. The average human being can only access ten percent of their brain and with this fact until the average human being is able to access the other ninety percent we can only defined a fraction of what art truly is.
