What is Art? 2.0
Before I began learning about art, I thought that art was not clear cut and there is no straightforward definition of what is art. I mainly believed that what was defined as art was dependent on the audience or viewer because the definition of art varies from person to person. I still agree with my past self that art depends on the viewer and that “art is a way of expression for people who can make a visual of their emotions rather than writing them down”. I first thought art was mainly a creative outlet for most people because that is what it is now, but throughout history the function of art varies between time periods and locations around the world.
Initially, I understood that art is a form of creative outlet but I did not realize how much art was shaped by the political or religious events happening during a certain time period. Art not only reflects the culture of the people making the art but also the technology or progression of human beings. I do not necessarily disagree with what I said earlier this year, but I think this class has broadened my understanding of the importance of culture and art. I stated that art could be anything: stick figures, clay sculptures, etc. Even though I said it could be anything, I had no idea came in different forms, such as performance art which is not as well known, and that art had functions besides fame or just for visual appeal. I definitely agree because that is in correlation to the idea that art is dependent on the viewer because I have and will have different views on certain pieces of art as I age. A person’s view and opinion of art depends on their background and what that person has experienced. At the beginning while learning about prehistoric art, I went to LACMA and that art did not really apply to much of the modern art that was on display. I went recently when we had learned a majority of the required artworks, there were so many more similarities that I did not catch. Art is like a never-ending line of dominoes because each art movement affects another time period that is in another part of the world. As the world progressed there was more communication through trade and modern technology that the influence of art has grown. Many artists and people believe that technology is taking away from old traditions and straying people from wanting to see art, but technology is actually expanding the art world. People from the other side of the world can send a message through art here and artists go to another country to bring back the story of those people and underlying struggles that most of the human population does not see.
Before I started this class, I thought you could only analyze the color or other basic elements of a painting, but there are so many other elements of artworks that I did not know about. I had no idea how much current events affect the art and the form or materials used. I also did not know that artists use certain techniques to convey a certain message, such as specific color hues or arranging the composition in a certain way to make it more or less visually appealing.
My opinion of art has stayed the same but also altered in a way. I had an idea of how broad art was but did not really have much to actually think of. By taking APAH, this class has exposed me to an insurmountable number of artworks and truly showing me how vague the definition of art is and broadened my cultural knowledge.
