Art is “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings”. To me, this definition is only partially true. I believe that art has to be backed up by passion. Passion is the key element in art because it’s the real connection between the artist and the canvas. Without passion, there is no true beauty behind a piece of artwork. Art is an expression of yourself and your ideas with feelings of emotion and mood to set the tone. The emotion must contain passion so the art can be relatable. Sometimes the art seems insignificant or the meaning is unclear, but after analization there are so many symbols and hidden messages within a piece of art.
We create art because it is a world wide connection. It’s almost as if pictures, painting, sculptures and music have their own mutual language. Different art movements spread across the whole world in a certain time period. Certain trends, materials and subjects in art were popular at the same time but in different parts of the world and it brought together cultures and artists. The use of oil paint, for example, spread across Europe in the age of enlightenment and became popular for a long period of time.
Art from different centuries and from before common era still hold interest because it is a look into the past and it tells stories from long ago that we wouldn't be able to remember normally. For example, The Hall of Bulls in Lascaux, France was painted in between the years 28,000 to 10,000 BCE. There are paintings over each other which shows early signs of animation which is meant to tell a story. People used these caves as canvas throughout many different years and it shows the communication between different ages. This is one of the earliest examples of artwork but we still know very little.
Art is also used as self expression or life stories. Some people are too shy or scared to share their stories in words. People think it is easier to let out emotions with art, and art is also relatable when it has to do with each others feelings. Similarly, art is used to make a statement. Whether it is politically like presidential posters or symbolically like skin tattoos. Art is a way to express what you want without being ashamed.
“Art is not, as the metaphysicians say, the manifestation of some mysterious idea of beauty or God; it is not, as the aesthetic physiologists say, a game in which man lets off his excess of stored-up energy; it is not the expression of man’s emotions by external signs; it is not the production of pleasing objects; and, above all, it is not pleasure; but it is a means of union among men, joining them together in the same feelings, and indispensable for the life and progress toward well-being of individuals and of humanity” (Tolstoy). This quote shows how art has united mankind since the beginning of time and how it never fails to build a creative bond. Art is the simply artist's imagination or inspiration poured on a canvas or built in a sculpture. Symbolism and hidden meanings inside paintings come from the mind of the artist and not from the need to please.
