The Embodiment of Emotion Revisited
From the past year, I have drawn to a conclusion that art is the embodiment of Man’s soul, spirituality, and individuality. I can also say that over the course of the year, I have gained a deeper appreciation for modern art such as Pop art and Dada styles. I will admit to this as these works incorporate the beliefs of the artist. Throughout history, each work of art shows individual characteristics, such as the paintings of the Renaissance with the styles of DaVinci and Michelangelo, which both highlight the importances of each artist; the human body, but by proportions in DaVinci’s work and observation in Michelangelo’s. There is also an observable individualism of works that was aroused in the Renaissance and stuck around for the past 600 years. It is because of this quality of Individuality, we can distinguish pieces of art by different artists, since many had different focuses and stylistic choices. With this new experience and knowledge, I can tell more of the art that I would disregard in the past. It is like learning a language; first, it seems like gibberish and makes no sense, but after learning necessities and delving deeper, you can see the meaning behind what is put in front of you. I still believe that art is human emotion, but I also feel that it is also comprised of the individual’s beliefs and soul. The raw emotion can come in both the most complex paintings, but also in a simple Sunflower Seed or Summer Trees, which can start a political message and stir the world. Art is both a series of rules and no constraints, except for the artist’s own self and perception. All the feeling in art is translated in all forms of media, from how the brushstrokes were formed to material used to blatant words on the artwork. I think that from the time spent in this class, I have been forced to grow into a more perceptive person, even if I can’t exactly word my thoughts as sentences. This class has also made me want to pursue art in my own fashion, be it in music, in science (“It counts as an art, there’s a muse of science”, he said proudly), or in a hobby. It made me think that I want to work in what I love, as the artist we have studied did, and it made me open my eyes towards all the possibilities. The best way to close this I believe is a “thank you” for the class and opportunity because it can change a person drastically from beginning to end if they allow it, even if they don’t immediately notice the changes. So, just thank you for opening my mind to new experiences and teaching me that no work or person is as simple as it appears, there is a soul beneath the surface and beliefs that drive its existence.
